Sunday, September 26th, 2010I am very happy with my Hoover SteamVac. It was easy to assemble and easy to use. It cleaned my very dirty carpets- two dogs and two kids. I live in Alaska and we track in a lot of dirt and mud. The amount of dirt that the SteamVac removed from the carpet was amazing! I dumped bucket after bucket of filthy water. I now feel much more comfortable watching my three year roll around on our clean carpet.
I would recommend this machine to anyone looking for a cleaner that can do heavy duty cleanup- but you do have to commit some time. It took me three hours to do our small living room- but that was the first time it had ever been cleaned. I also think this machine is going to be great for quick cleanup jobs. I store it right next to the vaccuum- it doesn’t take up that much space.
This machine is a great value.

Problem of Grateful Dead Your Space
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 …I’m assuming you know what this book is about, and if you don’t, there are a few thousand other reviews on this site alone to tell you. Here’s a little persuasion to give the book a try;
It’s a good book. Hate me for this if you want, but no, it’s not really life-changing. It’s not the worst book ever written, either. Yeah, it’s this huge phenomenon, but I like it as…a good book. Yep, it’s unrealistic (it’s about VAMPIRES! Of COURSE it’s unrealistic!) but as far as the romance goes, isn’t it better to be unrealistic in a pretty, romantic way instead of the usual, you can do drugs, sex and smoking every freaking night without any side-effects unrealistic. Please, this is a fantasy book, it’s supposed to be escape from real life.
And it’s a good escape. Though VERY long, it’s also VERY readable, with good, engrossing writing, likable if not always extrodinary characters, and a simple, but well executed, plot. Bella can be an annoying narrator, because her narration includes all those unspoken uncertanties and doubts that we all have.
Anyway, I liked this book, I’ll probably re-read it, and the movie’s okay too. Food for thought; how many people who say they hate Twilight own the whole series? How many own the whole series in hardback?
PS Parents will want to know, this is a very conservative book compared to most YA romances. No sex. Very little violence. The book’s suspenceful, not scary.

Friday, July 2nd, 2010Artemis Fowl was the recipient of the accusation in the title of this review, but even though he is a thief, he is also much more. The twelve-year-old genius has decided to use his intelligence to pursue a life of crime, so we find an unusual situation. A story with an evil main character is not a completely new concept; Jean-Baptiste Grenouille in the outstanding “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” or Serge A. Storms in the series of books by Tim Dorsey come to mind. If we go into a different media, then Tony Soprano is one of the most famous examples in our time. What is novel though, is using this concept in a book targeted to young adults, and this is certainly a reason for controversy. I have to say though that the final product is so good, that the good aspects of this effort more than overcome this “drawback”.
Artemis Fowl descends from a prestigious family of billionaires that a few years ago suffered a reversal of fortune. His father has disappeared and is presumed dead and her mother has gone crazy with grief. Artemis is decided to return his family to where it is supposed to be and crafts a plan designed to do just this. To try to accomplish his goal, he uses the help of Butler, a mountain of a man, expert in combat, and who as his name suggests is Artemis’ butler, and Juliet, Butler’s sister. The plan involves kidnapping a fairy and then getting a ransom in gold, which is a lot harder than it sounds.
The story involves a myriad of creatures besides fairies, such as goblins, elves, dwarves, centaurs and trolls. These variety allows the author to create several characters within each one of these groups that are interesting, peculiar and endearing. But the creative process does not stop there, since the author uses some of these peculiar characteristics, as well as some acute comments to make us laugh us loud in the middle of the action. In my opinion the funniest scene in the book involved Mulch, a dwarf, and Butler, you will know what I am talking abou

Sunday, June 27th, 2010Use this on the dogs and on the cat. Great tool. The dogs and the cat are indoors most of the time and this keeps the hair down to a reasonable level. Easy and effective and the dogs seem to enjoy the grooming – doesn’t hurt or pull – so given with a little massaging they like it. Our cat is a little trickier but doesn’t really seem to mind it. Where was this tool years ago? If you’ve got pets we highly recommend the Furminator.
