3D Dot Game Heroes

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

The graphics are very good, obviously not God of War III quality, however they are extremely charming, I might even say “cute”. All of the environments and character models are built out of little cubes, think LEGOs, but 1×1 size blocks. I was surprised how much detail can be created using simple blocks. There obviously aren’t any fine details, however if you’ve ever played Nintendo or Sega Master System games you will appreciate the graphics. Throughout the world are bodies of water and what appears to be lava, but it’s swirling and not made out of cubes. It’s a blend between 8-bit graphics and sort of hokey special effects, I love it!

BenQ W6000 1080p DLP Projector

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

I’ve been using a front projection setup for several years now, starting with a serendipitous purchase of an NEC LT150 that was a “price mistake” find. After getting it and figuring out how to mount it, put up a screen and run cables in the ceiling with a friend’s help, I’ve been hooked on the true theater type experience that a projector provides. It was a dim, loud, business class projector but still a thrill to have a 100″ picture. I upgraded over the years to a brighter NEC business projector, then finally entered real home theater projector land with a 1080p Optoma HD80. At the time, the HD80 was one of the best bang for the buck projectors ever made, and I enjoyed the heck out of it. One of the things that bugged me with the NEC business projectors was the dreaded DLP “rainbow effect”, and with the HD80 that was minimized enough that it never really bothered me.

VIZIO M220VA 22-inch Full HD 1080p LED LCD HDTV

This TV is stunning!!! For under $300, you will not find any better! The sound is weak, but there is a cheap and easy fix. Buy some computer speakers and plug them into the headphone jack on the side of the unit. I use a 3 piece Logitech set w/ a sub that sounds great! They cost about $50. I use this TV to play xbox on when the main TV is in use. We have a 40′ Sony w/ 120mhz refresh rate (paid $1800 for!!!) and the Vizio looks just as good! I promise you will not be disappointed with this TV!!!!

Mario Kart DS

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Mario games, over the years have been some of the most succesful of all of the systems, and Mario Kart DS is no different.

Gameplay: Excelent gameplay. New items, new characters, and four modes is non-stop fun. I have logged atleast 50 hours into Mario Kart DS, and still play more. Even after beating all of the courses once, you have the challenge of beating them all with one star. Don’t forget battle mode aswell! 5/5 for Gameplay.

Sound/Graphics: Now, we know that nintendo isn’t the greatest at graphics, but, these I think are good. They have put gameplay first, which I think is fine. There is one glitch I found with the graphics, that sometimes people dissapear. But it’s kind of funny. The sound was great. nice and clear. You can’t mistake a noise for something else. Well-done! 4/5 for graphics/sound

This is a great mower. Easy to use, and the cord is not really that difficult to deal with. Not having to deal with gas, oil, plugs etc. more than makes up for the minor incovenience of a cord. I have read reviews of this mower that say only consider it if your yard is a quarter-acre or less. I would say that if you can reach every part of your yard with a 100-foot cord, taking into account your outlet locations and a little extra cord for turns, you are a prime candidate for this mower. The bagger and mulcher functions both work great. It is not powered, but is fairly lightweight and easy to push.

Apple MacBook Pro MB471LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop

Friday, June 25th, 2010

The only challenge I had, and it was minor, was installing the RAM upgrade. I bought 4 GB RAM at the same time as Apple MacBook Pro MB471LL/A Laptop because I wanted to have the full memory capacity, especially for business apps and VMware Fusion. The upgrade isn’t difficult (unlike the Mac Mini!), but it does take some care and two sizes of small screwdrivers to complete. Eight screws have to come out, and four of them are quite small. Take care to keep from dropping any of the smaller screws into Apple MacBook Pro MB471LL/A Laptop when you’re reinstalling them. Cover alignment is also important to get just right, or the battery/HDD hatch doesn’t close properly. As with any project, put all the screws in before tightening any of them.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 12.1MP Micro Four-Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera

Friday, June 25th, 2010

I have been into amateur photography most of my life (getting too old to carry all the heavy stuff) and wanted a light, easy to use, go everywhere camera that takes quality pictures comparable to a mid-level DSLR. The Panasonic Lumix GF1 delivers.
This camera is very light and handles well. The image quality is excellent with both the 14-45mm and neat little 20mm f1.7 lenses. I have made 16×20 enlargements with raw images in photoshop with great results. These are close to my Canon D50 shots using an L series lense. The focus is fast and true, great live view with sharp auto and enlarged screen manual focusing. The viewing screen is sharp and clear; however I did get the optional viewfinder which works well especially with bright scenics. I will not review the video or the numerous features other then to say there are many, easy to use options, some quite sophisticated.
